Science Week 2020
Science week was on in January and all our budding scientists were busy observing, questioning, discussing, predicting, exploring, investigating, designing, making and taking part in science!
'Through science education, children construct, modify and develop a broad range of scientific concepts and ideas. Working scientifically involves them in observation, questioning, discussion, prediction, analysis, exploration, investigation, and experimentation, while the knowledge and skills they acquire may be applied in designing and making tasks. Thus, science education equips children to live in a world that is increasingly scientifically and technologically oriented.' (The Science Curriculum Ireland, p.6)

School Mascot Naming Competition 2019
A very kind parent, Paloma De Paz and her family have gifted two lovely St.Cronan’s JNS mascot dolls to our school (see pictures below).
We decided they were so beautiful they needed some friendly age-appropriate names.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the competition and congratulations to the winners.
The winning names were James and Rosie.
Sincerely,
St Cronan’s JNS

Maths Week Winners
Maths Weeks - 21/1/19 to 1/2/19
Theme: Maths is all around us.
The children had great fun over the past few weeks buzzing around the school on maths trails. They were looking for signs of maths with their “maths eyes” on. They found numbers, shapes, patterns, angles, symmetry, time, money, measure and lots more.
The children have also been looking for signs of maths in their home environment too. We had a competition for the best photo and drawing of “Maths is all around us”. We are astounded by the standard of entries and the ingenuity! The entries were so colourful and novel. The winning entries are displayed in the school. We would like to extend a big thank you to all the children and parents for your enthusiasm and creativity.
The children brought in examples of maths too (cereal boxes with prices and measures, toy clocks, old phones, 3D shapes etc). Classes then made fantastic displays of all the found objects.
It was great to listen to the children talk so enthusiastically about the subject. They discovered how maths is real and all around us!
Well done everyone! Prizes and photos of the winning entries are on the way soon!

The Year of the Pig
Chinese New Year started on the 5/2/19 this year. It is also Vietnamese New Year (Tet). Celebrations last for 15 days ending with the beautiful lantern festival.
This year it’s the Year of the Pig, the 12th animal in the Chinese Zodiac. People born in the year of the pig make fantastic friends. They are thoughtful, polite, chatty, honest and curious. Someone born in the year of the pig might make a good doctor/vet/shopkeeper/comedian/chef.
The children loved learning the story of how each year got animal names (“The Great Race”/ The Chinese Zodiac Story). We have a Chinese/Vietnamese Artefact Box and lots of displays around the school. The children have learned about Chinese New Year traditions/ clothes/ numbers /calligraphy/facts about China and Vietnam/The Great Wall of China and much more. They have even played some Chinese Games.
We all love celebrating Chinese New Year in St. Cronan’s School. Happy New Year.
“Gong hei fat choy” (Chinese) “Chuc mung nam moi” (Vietnamese)
