Our maths topic last week was weight.  We estimated which objects were heavy and which were lighter.  We then used to balance to check.  The heavier object went down and the lighter object went up.

After reading the story of The Little Red Hen we did some research into how wheat grows and how bread is made.  We decided to bake our own loaf of bread and all the boys and girls agreed it was delicious.  We wrote our own Little Red Hen stories and some children made bread from playdough in the creative area and acted out the story in the small world area.

Active Week arrived in St Cronan's on Monday,.  We had Walk To School (room 8 won on Thursday with 92% of children walking to school).  Every day we had Drop Everything and Dance,Active Breaks and Shake and Wake.  We did extra yard every day and had lots of activities such as target throwing, parachute and hoops.  We also learned how to skip and took part in the Skipathon on Tuesday.  On Thursday we went to the hall for the hip-hop-a-thon.  We did LOTS of dancing - star jump, move your body, rock the boat,follow the leader and loads more.  Active Week also saw the return of Fruit Friday to St Cronan's - yummy!

We have been working hard on our sight words in school - playing Bingo, making sentences and writing sentences.  It is really important that the children read the words and little books regularly at home
This week in maths we were exploring money.  We are learning to recognise 1c, 2c and 5c coins and we are practising paying for items using 1c coins

Our Garden box was looking very shabby with lots of weeds and stones.  Thanks to the very hard work of Conor's Mammy and Granny we now have some beautiful flowers and plants.  The children loved getting their hands dirty by helping to weed and plant.  Now we just have to remember to water them!

Our theme this month was "Nursery Rhymes, Fairytales and Castles".  We read lots of traditional tales - Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin, The Princess and the pea, Sleeping Beauty,The Goose Girl etc.  We did lots of discussion around castles, knights and dragons.  Our role-play area was a castle and we had fairytales in the small-world area.  In the creative area we had fairytale playdough mats and painting.  Lots of elaborate castles were built in the construction area.
Many of the children did independent writing during playtime which was great to see - making signs and maps and writing letters and stories.

We have been studying Forces in Science and we have been exploring floating and sinking.  We carried out some experiments complete with predictions and recording.  As part of our hour of play we had water in the messy area and continued our investigations there.
