Discover Primary Science

27/2/2014

Yesterday we started working as scientists.  We investigated forces and floating and sinking. We discovered that an orange will float in water but a peeled orange will sink. This is because the skin is full of air bubbles that protect the orange and makes it lighter than water.
We also investigated "dancing raisins" and experimented with making a boat that floats - it was harder than you might think!
We used lots of scientific words sich as "observe/ predict/ measure" and talked about the importance of making a fair test

Today we visited the Junior Infants and read them stories. We put lots of work into choosing the books and planning questions.  Well done 2nd class for being so grown up and well done junior infants for being such super listeners. We can't wait to visit them again.

Our topic in maths for the next 2 weeks is money.  We will be focusing on making amounts up to €2 using coins.  We will also be working out ways to give change.  A great way to help your child with this topic is to let them handle real money - count it, pay for items, work out how much change they should get and what coins can make up different amounts .  For example 37c = 20c+10c+5c+1c or 10c+10c+10c+2c+2c+1c+2c.

Here are some games you can play to help you learn about money

Money Machine - what amounts can you make
How much ?
Go Shopping
give change
coin exchange
money maths challenge - easy
money maths challenge - hard
