In phonics we have been learning lots of new digraphs and blends. They make reading and writing so much easier to grasp and were making fantastic progress in our work.

Pop Art

2/11/2013

We learned about the famous American artist Andy Warhol and we analysed some of his artwork. Andy Warhol used the technique of Popart in his creations so we decided to create our own Popart using autumn trees.

Halloween Fun

2/11/2013

In History we learned all about the history behind Halloween games, traditions, costumes , food etc. We looked at some spooky recipes that we could create over the mid term break also. The children designed a questionaire that they could ask their parents about Halloween when they were young. Some of the findings were so interesting. We learned that most of our parents made their own costumes and instead of using the term "Trick or Treat"  they said " Help the Halloween Party". In class we carved our own class pumpkin and played some Halloween games . We also dressed up and had a party they day we finished up for the mid-term break.

English

2/11/2013

We have been so busy in English. We have read the first two stories from our reader so far and are about to start the new vocabulary from our next story. In writing we have been writing lists, stories, and recipes. We wrote recipes for smoothies, lemonade and cackle cakes. Some of the children brought in some that they made at home to show to the class. They looked delicious.

Second Class Maths

2/11/2013

In Maths we spent most of September revising the concepts taught in first class. We 've been doing lots of work on Mental Maths strategies, addition with renaming, place value, the 100 square, data and lots more. Here are some photographs of us completing some maths challenges in groups of three.

Maths Week

2/11/2013

During Maths week we did a few different Maths trails. We went on a car park trail , we did a Halloween trail and we also had a maths games afternoon. It was great fun and we also learned so much at the same time.

Making Smoothies

2/11/2013

In Science and S.P.H.E we discussed healthy eating and looking after our bodies so we thought an exciting way to incorporate healthy eating into our classroom would be to make some delicious smoothies . In English we learned how to do procedural writing i.e. recipes, so we wrote the recipe on how to make a smoothie into our copies and then we made them later that day.

In geography, we have been learning about different types of homes e.g. semi-detatched, bungalow, terraced. We also discussed homes in different countries e.g. igloo, mudhuts, wigwams etc. We looked at the different types of materials used to make these homes and what type of materials are most suitable to making homes here in Ireland.

November 2nd, 2o13

2/11/2013

We brought in photographs of when we were babies and discussed how much we have grown and changed since then. We tried to guess from the photographs who each baby was. We then made timelines outlining the significant events that have occurred in our lives from baby to school child.
