It is the highest mountain on Earth!

Here are some facts about Everest!
  • You might have been as high as the top of Mt. Everest....The mountain is 8,848 metres tall. That's almost exactly the same height as a jumbo jet flies at!
  • Everest is part of the Himalaya mountain range and it sits between two countries; Nepal and Tibet
  • The mountain is still growing! It gets a centimetre taller every 2-3 years!
  • The first European to see the mountain was George Everest. He discovered it in 1841. The local people have known about the mountain for thousands of years and they call it by two different names:  Sagarmartha (in Nepal) and Chomolangma (in Tibet). Chomolangma means "Goddess of the sky"!
  • The first people to climb the mountain were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay - Hillary was from New Zealand and Norgay was from Nepal.

This is Carrauntoohil!
It is the tallest mountain in Ireland.
You would need about 9 Carrauntoohils stacked on top of each other to be as high as Everest!
